Collecting Suggestions
One of the wonderful aspects of Psychedelic Art is that it is an incredibly fertile field that offers collectors a wide range of possibilities and themes for building a collection. Every day we receive questions from collectors about “where to start”.
In every case, our advice is that your collection should meet two critical criteria:
- You should only collect items that are of interest and appeal to you. Never buy a poster because someone else tells you its great. Your goal should be to build something personal that will grow each year in meaning and importance to you. Only in this way will you be assured of sticking with your collection and enjoying the tremendous benefits that long term collecting offers.
-
Try to maintain a “theme” for your collection. Successful collectors and dealers know that there is a big difference between an interesting, coherent collection of material and a random “pile of stuff”.
Real collectors develop an area of personal interest and build their collecting goals around acquiring material that is relevant to their area of specialty. By sticking to this strategy, each new acquisition you make will add to the overall desirability and uniqueness of your entire collection.
Unsophisticated collectors race out and accumulate on a random basis. There is no underlying logic or goal they are trying to accomplish. No piece relates in any way to any other piece. It leaves the viewer of the collection….and ultimately you the collector …. cold and uninspired. Which means you might as well not part with your hard earned dollars in the first place. So make sure you always collect with a purpose. You will be richly rewarded for doing so.
Below are just a few ideas for specialized collections that we have successfully assisted collectors in building:
- Collect one poster from each year.
- Collect one poster from each band.
- Collect one poster from each venue.
- Collect one poster from each artist.
- Collect one band, lots of different venues.
- Collect one venue, lots of different bands.
- Collect one artist, lots of different bands and venues.
- Collect one year, lots of different bands, venues and artists.
This list is provided simply as a starting point. The opportunities are limited only by your imagination. The idea is simply to build a collection that “hangs together” and grows in importance and interest to you!
